Katie asks...

What are your favorite books for teaching math concepts?

I love Give Me Half by Stuart J. Murphy for introducing fractions. I also like Bunny Day by Rick Walton for introducing the clock. What other picture books do you love to use?

  2. In Kindergarten I used Leo Lionni's Inch by Inch to teach about measuring using non-standard objects. Afterwards we measured different things in centers using little green inch long papers that looked like worms.

  5. Hi Katie! I love the blog idea. I shared it in a post on my teaching blog at roreyrisdon.edublogs.org.

I have a quick questions. What is the best way to send you question. Should I just reply on someone's post? I looked for a link to your email address on the home page, but couldn't find it. Thanks for the help because I can't wait to start asking (more) questions.

  6. Hi Rorey! I just sent you an email, please let me know if you got it! :) The best way to ask questions is by sending them to me at teachthentell@gmail.com I posted that in the 'How It Works' tab, but you're right, it does not have a link. I can work on that. :)

  8. Off the top of my head, I like these books for teaching math concepts in kindergarten and first grade:

The Button Box by ? (counting and sorting)
Color Zoo by Lois Ehlert (shapes)
Let's Go Visiting by Sue Williams (counting, addition)
The Napping House by Audrey Wood (counting, addition)
One Hundred Hungry Ants by Elinor Pinczes (skip counting, 100th day of school-use with older kids for multiplication/division)
The Shape of Things by ? (shapes)
Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews (counting and addition)
My books are packed away right now, so I'm not sure of exact titles but I use some of Tanya Hoban's books. I also read books like The M & M Counting Book, Dominoes Addition... There is one with Hershey Candy Bar and another one with licorice. Who can resist reading The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins to introduce problem solving, fair shares...? Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed (subtraction)...
Can you tell I love books? Tee Hee!
